About the book: What can you see is an exciting new resource, inpsired by the experiences of children and young people who are blind and partially sighted. A new book from VIcky taylor - Caitlan's wish.........

cover

Caitlin’s Wish is a storybook written for children who have a disabled or sick family member, relative or friend. It is a magical fairytale with a twist. Enabling young carers to see their role from a different perspective, and enabling those not affected by disability to get an insight into what being a young carer is really like!

Victoria wrote it for her daughter, Adele-Caitlin when she found it hard to come to terms with her father’s disability. Adele-Caitlin was only 2 yrs old when her father was diagnosed with a rare brain condition called Intracranial Hypertension (IH). She was so young that she just accepted the situation. It was only when she went to school that she started to compare her life with others and realised that her life was different. She felt so sad and isolated by her situation, but was too young to access any support. (There is very little support for young carers under the age of 8 yrs old.)

Inspired to try and make a difference, Victoria wrote the book with young carers in mind. The book helps them to see the positive elements in their lives rather than dwelling on the negatives.read more.......

The IH Research Foundation

The IH Research Foundation is the only non profit organization in the world devoted to supporting the medical research of chronic IH. Their mission is to discover why IH happens, along with new, effective therapies to treat the disorder.
Their ultimate goal is to find a cure.
So what is IH?
IH is an invisible illness where the person looks “fine” when they are not! That is why I am taking this opportunity to help raise awareness for IH and the Intracranial Hypertension Research Foundation (IHRF), which is working hard to improve the lives of people affected by IH.
“Intracranial hypertension” literally means that cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pressure within the skull is too high. Chronic intracranial hypertension (IH) is a serious neurological disorder that can cause severe headaches, vision loss, blindness and life-altering disability. Anyone can develop chronic IH at anytime in life. There currently is no cure. read more......

New - Assessment for visually and multi impaired children

By Lynne deakin - teacher of children with vi.

This innovative assessment tool has been carefully constructed by a well qualified and experienced teacher of children with visual and other profound disabilities.  It differs from other assessments by giving credit for small steps of achievement and is embedded in advice from established authorities.
The document has been produced under headings of recognised visual and sensory stages of development and is sub-divided into minute steps, which gives greater scope for achievement to the more severely disabled children and adolescents.
It is easy to read and follow, has useful strategies, and is given further credence by being cross-referenced to PIVATS.This is an exciting opportunity to purchase an invaluable assessment tool. The CD is priced at £50 (+VAT) to reflect the time devoted to constructing the tool, referring to appropriate research, and the quality of the material. Consultation/training is also available at the cost of £50 (+VAT) for one hour, plus travelling expenses. For more information or to order- contact the Author at : lynette.deakin@liverpool.gov.uk
